Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
