Senate Passes Measure to Release Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday passed without delay to legislation that will require the publication of official records related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a change of position by the president and his GOP allies. Trump's team changed course after an extended period of trying to block the joint action involving a scandal that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Earlier that day, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have waited long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the top Senate Democrat said in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

The bill next will be sent to Donald Trump for his endorsement. The president stated on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Though the president has for months dismissed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the measure over the past few days, and announced he would sign the measure if it comes to him.

Response

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their advocates who were seated in a public section, applauded after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from Clay Higgins, who said he was concerned the measure would make public specific data of individuals involved, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
